Am cat-sitting (not sitting on the cat) for 2 weeks, and he's just spent his first 24 hrs here. Not as bad as I had expected. The last time he was here, he spent most of his time behind the sofa. By the time he got comfy enough to roam around, it was time to go home. This time though, he started exploring almost right away. I had read somewhere that if you bring along your cat when you move, you should mark the new place with his scent so that it's not so strange or new to him (real easy to fool, aren't they?), so that's what I did. On Sunday, when I brought over some of his food and litter (minus tray), I also made sure to use a piece of cloth when petting him (esp the cheek/neck area where the scent glands are). I then rubbed this piece of cloth over certain spots at my place - along the wall, mostly - to transfer his scent. I guessed it worked, as he was out and about almost immediately. He did hide behind the sofa occassionally. I guess that's because it still has his scent, seeing that it came from where he actually lives, and also from the last time he spent three days hiding behind it. And also because it's dark and cosy and no one can get to him there.
Getting him over was rather an ordeal, though. It must have been the wettest day in Singapore so far this year. It'd been raining non-stop since the previous night, so I had to transport him in the pouring rain. He didn't make a fuss when I put him into his carrier. But he did almost immediately after. Kept scratching at the latch, and meowing. Whoever said that Siamese were very vocal cats got it right. He was meowing all the way back to my place. Loud, frustrated, angry, "LET ME OUTTA HERE" meows. The cab-driver certainly got the message. He was driving fast. And a tad recklessly, given the rainy conditions. I think he wanted to get rid of the racket as soon as he could.
He is a most contrary cat. I went over in the evening to get him. He had the entire day to use his loo, but does he? Of course not. He had to wait till immediately after I threw away the litter, and put his tray away for transport, to decide that he had to go. So I set up a temp one using his old, and much too small tray for him. Tough. Who asked him to wait till I cleared it?
Anyway, like I said, I think he's settling in fine. JH thinks he sees this as his summer home or something. It's real fun watching him explore. Cautious, but not scared like last time.
One thing about having him here - the apartment's apparently not as clean as I thought it is - he's managed to find the dusty / dirty spots. I know because he's left pawprints everywhere. Sigh.
